2021.12.04 13:59 jfanch42 What does it mean for writing to be artistic?

Questions on this forum are usually technical. That's not surprising given that it largely caters to beginners trying to publish in commercial fiction. That being said, I think that even the most populist of authors should consider the artistic merits of their work. As writers, we have to face the expectations of what society deems to be of cultural value as well as our own drive to create what we're passionate about and sometimes they conflict. I've been thinking about this as I contemplate my own book and the works that inspired it. As such, this post will partly be my thoughts on what I think are the current standards for artistic achievement in writing and partly a confessional on the ambivalence I feel about my own artistic interests. I am just hoping to share my thoughts on the subject and get some feedback, I apologize if at any time I am too verbose.
*Before that though I have two disclaimers.
*1: My observations and generalizations are about the popular zeitgeist and cultural gravity of a thing not its occurrence by raw numbers. I'm sure any trend I mention has a million counter-examples, I am just working off of what seems to be on the mind this forum and in the broader writing community.
*2: This post is not designed to call out, insult, or harass anyone or anything. I am not claiming to be absolutely correct or that I come from any position of authority. If at any point I do seem too strident, this was not intentional and I apologize preemptively. The sole purpose of this post is to stimulate academic discussion.
In general, it seems that there are a few modes of writing that are thought of as artistic. These aren't so much tropes as they are points on different axes. Of course, there are critically acclaimed works that fall anywhere on these spectrums but generally, I find there is a certain prestige associated with one end of each spectrum over the other. They are:
Formalism vs Realism:
Formalism means a few things in different contexts but what I mean when I talk about it here I mean the tendency of a story to experiment with and draw attention to its own form. In terms of style, this can mean complex or dense prose or prose that reflects the content of the story, like a story about insanity being told via stream of consciousness. In terms of story, I would say it also means deliberate artificiality. Characters will behave less like people and more like symbols for abstract concepts. The story may lean into melodrama and heightened emotions. Plot details may be strange or incoherent existing more for mood than for any kind of story logic. At the far end, it might manifest as straight-up surrealism.
Realism, or more properly, Naturalism is about trying to capture real life as accurately as possible. Characters are portrayed authentically with normal human foibles. Dialogue is also very realistic without a lot of lofty soliloquies. Plot points will be reserved and undramatic.
While as I said, Formalism does have its respected hits like Ulysses and The House of Leaves I would say that for the most part Realism is more admired. A truly exceptional Formalist book will sometimes gain wide acclaim but the vast majority of the most highly rated books each year tend to be Realist. This is especially true when it comes to "book club literature" where autobiography and quasi-autobiography are king. Even in less classy genres like Fantasy, there is a push to make things realistic. Grey morality, ambiguity, more deeply flawed protagonists, more historical and social inspiration, focus on mental illness. All of it is part of a trend towards Realism.
This is a rejection of more symbolic stories. Many have argued that The Lord of the Rings actually is a nuanced and complex exploration of morality and war but it is a story that is simple on a literal plot level and this is often seen as a flaw. The tendency toward realism has affected all western media, from books to film to television. Funnily enough it formalism seems to be the dominant style in Asian media. Anime and Bollywood are well known for their heightened emotions and rapid shifting between tones. I had this thought while I was watching Squid Game. It is a show all about its aesthetic which is very stagey and it goes for impact while forgoing realism. Even Asian literature tends to operate on the more Formalist end of the spectrum. Take for example Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami. It uses an already mood heavy genre and heightens it more by taking its absurd premise at face value.
Even though Realism is better regarded I prefer to read and write Formalist works. I took inspiration from a lot of things for my book. Things like Noir, Comic books, Anime, Horror literature. The thing that unifies them is that they all create a more heightened reality. They all tend to be melodramatic as well, about big sadness and big joy and play with a lot of different moods. I like heightened reality and I apricate works that can rapidly shift in tone.
Universal vs Social Theme:
Social themes are themes dealing with social or political subjects. Things like racism, war, inequality, gender. Even if a story is about an individual character's struggle it would still be a social story if the main source of conflict is a social subject. For example the short story, The Yellow Wall-Paper is about one woman's mental break down but it is narrowly focused on the treatment of women when it was written. There are other hallmarks of social stories as well. They tend to be didactic for lack of a better word. The author is usually very sure of what he wants to say and very determined that the audience understands the theme. It also tends to be much more heavily judgmental of its characters. Characters are either presented as role models or anti role models; even if the characters are nuanced, the audience is supposed to recognize what are their good parts and their bad parts.
Universal themes however are themes that are more abstract and more personal. They often deal with psychological states and aspects of the human condition. Things like love, hate, revenge, nature, destiny, grief, obsession. I call them universal because they apply to all people, everywhere. Even if a work is about politics it may not be a social story. For example, while something, like To Kill a mocking Bird, is very clearly social, criticizing southern America during the depression. While something like McBeth, even if it is about politics, is universal as it deals with the questions about whether we control our own fate and how far are we willing to go for power.
I would say that the heyday of Universal stories was in the sixties and seventies. Especially in film, this was the era of the true anti-hero, a character that the audience doesn’t necessarily agree or disagree with but merely a fascinating character whose experience we want to observe. Thief, The Italian Job, Lupin the Third, are all examples of this kind of character. Books like Lolita and a Clockwork Orange were likewise lighter on one-to-one symbols and more "observational."; reflecting on the world more then trying to fix it. Recently this trend has reversed and now media is dominated by social stories. Specifically identity politics and class have become the dominant themes and what's more these themes are presented very directly with little ambiguity. Moby Dick could be about a lot of things, like man vs nature or obsession but there is only really one thing that say, the Handmaid's Tale could be about.
Once again my preferences are contrary to this trend. I like looser media that is about more abstract and philosophical themes. I find strong political theming whether I agree with it or not to be a bit of a turn-off. And the fact that so many of these works have to be very clear cut with what they think doesn’t allow for the depiction of controversial things without a lot of heavy-handed writing letting the audience know what is supposed to be good and bad. To put it another way, I would say that while universal writing says "this is the way life is." Social writing is more like "this is how life should be."
The Mundane vs The Extraordinary:
The last thing I wanted to talk about was the mundane vs the extraordinary. The mundane is as it sounds, it is about events that many if not most people could relate to. The Catcher in the Rye is a good example of this. It's really just about a guy wandering new York and meeting a few interesting but ordinary people. Extraordinary works are the opposite. They feature events and people that would be completely alien to most of the expected audience. Note that while extraordinary works would include basically all fantasy and science fiction it does not necessarily require supernatural elements; In The Old Man and the Sea nothing supernatural or even that implausible happens but I would still say that a saint like fisherman caught in a life and death struggle against a giant marlin is pretty extraordinary.
Both stories have their place but I prefer extraordinary stories. Whether the story is true or not I like art that explores the greatest highs and lows of the human experience. And once again I feel like I am in the minority. Mundane works are less popular but even that is seen as a sign of their prestige and maturity. This was what bothered me about reviews of the game Firewatch. The fact that it wasn’t popular with certain people was given as evidence of its maturity. Whether you liked it or not it was heavily praised as "mature" on the grounds that it depicted a more mundane scenario than most games and had a deliberately anti-climactic ending. Both are valid artistic choices but I don't know if that automatically makes something more "adult."
All of these conflicted feelings crystallized for me while I was reading Circe by Madeline Miller. It was an excellent book that I thoroughly recommend. During the book, I became acutely aware of what parts I liked about it and what I didn’t. The parts I liked were the parts heavy on mythology. The book makes the old Greek stories crackle with mythic intensity in a way that few modern retellings manage to pull off. The immortals in the book feel like truly alien beings that we can't fathom. The book really sells the godlike scale of Circe's loneliness.
The parts I didn’t like were whenever the book leaned into its very contemporary parable on gender politics. The book not only critics ancient Greek views of women but also problems that contemporary women face like not being acknowledged for their achievements. There is also a lengthy segment about pregnancy and rearing a baby that feels at least a little autobiographical and I'm sure was very relatable to people who have had children. And while I understood these parts intellectually, they did nothing for me emotionally.
The parts I liked were Formalist, Universal, and Extraordinary. The parts I didn’t were Realist, Social, and Mundane. And looking at what I like to read it fits. I like hard-boiled detective stories and dark gothic horror. I like melodrama. I like fun-loving but still self-serious urban fantasy. I like anime. And the book I writing features elements from all those genres. I can justify all of those preferences but they just run so counter to the critical consensus that I can't help but feel self-conscious about my, let's face it, juvenile taste.
That's why I want to know what you think. What do you think about my three axes? Am I correct about what is considered artistic? Are my tastes juvenile and if so is that a problem?

It was inhuman, what was done to me. It was brutal, carnivorous, just wrong. My petrified voice called a stricken plea, Silence that followed, a perilous song.
A frightened bird rose up, beating my ribs. Its inside flight a fruitless staccato. The little wings flapped, flapped, not helping. Its pitiful body caught in my throat.
My hands were but a tool, to be held down In such a vice-like grip, That I, unwilling, became an object, For degenerate and aberrant desires.
The animalistic body spurred on by Beastly thirst- Thirst for my young Soul and my young Body and then - a pause - he contemplated; his Prey And wounded deeply this helpless bird.
I could not fly away I couldn't fly at all in the unsatisfiable maw of the beast but why is this happening how do I get out somebody help how am I losing, losing
